Pair a tag to an item

A tag does nothing until it's paired with an item. Once it is, anyone who scans it reaches that item, and everything they report lands on that item's record.

Pair one item

Open an item that doesn't have a tag yet. You'll find these on the Unpaired tab of the Items page. The item shows Pair with tag to activate with two choices.

ButtonUse it when
Pair Existing TagYou have a printed tag in your hand. Search for the ID printed on it, pick it, and click Pair Tag.
Generate TagYou want a new tag to print yourself. ServiceTags creates one, and View QR code lets you print it.

Once paired, the item moves to the Active tab.

Pair many items at once

If you have a box of new tags and a list of unpaired items:

  1. On the Items page, go to Unpaired and tick the items you want.

  2. Click Pair tags in the bar at the bottom.

  3. ServiceTags gives each item one of your unused tags.

If you have fewer tags than items, the extra items stay unpaired, and ServiceTags tells you how many. If you have none at all, it asks you to order some first.

After a bulk pair, open each item to see which tag ID it got before you stick the tags on.

From the field app

Open the item in the ServiceTags app, open its menu, and tap Pair tag. Pick a tag from the list, or tap Generate New Tag.

Scanning a tag that isn't paired yet won't pair it. The app tells you the tag isn't linked to an item.

One tag, one item

A tag belongs to one item at a time, and an item has one tag.

To move a tag to different equipment, open the item it's on, choose Unpair tag from the menu, and confirm. The tag goes back to your unused tags and you can pair it with something else. The old item moves back to Unpaired.

Printing a tag

Open a paired item, choose View QR code from its menu, then Print. This prints one tag at a time. For more than a handful, ordering printed tags is quicker, and they hold up better to cleaning.
